pekin1ThumbThe Pekin or Peking, also White Pekin, is an American breed of domestic duck, reared principally for meat.
It derives from birds brought to the United States from China in the nineteenth century.
The birds are large-framed, hardy and fast-growing, they may reach a body-weight of more than 3.5 kg (7.7 lb) in seven weeks.
They have a high feed conversion ratio, are calm-tempered and fertile, and their eggs hatch well.
Ducks lay between 125 and 225 eggs per year and weigh approximately 70 grams (2.5 oz). American Pekin ducks have little tendency to broodiness,
they are not good sitters, and eggs may need to be incubated.
